Does Focusing change anything in real life?
Little changes and shifts gradually build over time
Christiane asks if Focusing changes anything in real life. I say yes it does, profoundly. Not only does Focusing enable you to make good decisions with confidence, it builds your confidence in yourself over a period of time. The changes that Focusing brings are small and subtle at first, yet over a period of time, you can see big changes. They are sometimes referred to as ‘steps’, little changes and shifts that gradually build over time into something that is progressive, unmistakeable and permanent. You may change so much that you forget what the problem was when you started!
How do you help this change process to happen?
Step 1: By listening carefully and with interested attention to what your inner self is telling you. If you are not paying yourself close attention, what you were with will more than likely lose interest and go away.
Step 2: Acknowledge what it is telling you. It has something important to say, and so you receive it and acknowledge it. And notice how your body responds to being received in this way.
Step 3: Before the end of the Focusing session, ask it how it wants you to be, after the session. This is important. There maybe some real life changes it wants you to make, and this is the moment of transition at the end of the session, when it can give you some hints and information about what real life changes are possible.
And don’t forget step 4: Check in with your inner self from time to time after the session. The change process has started and may continue after the session. You can ask inside yourself, how are you now? This helps to maintain a friendly inner relationship with yourself, and if there is new information coming, you are there to receive it.
The Focusing change process works in two ways. One is consciously making changes in response to new awareness gained in a session, as I have just described. The other is subtler: the body changes physiologically through the Focusing process in ways that we cannot predict and are often surprising. These changes always move towards a positive and life-enhancing direction.
